Inspired by worldwide success of Slow Food movement Italians started a new chapter of slow travel development – the Slow Cities movement “Citta Slow”. Slow cities are characterised by a way of life that supports people to live slow. Traditions and traditional ways of doing things are valued. These cities stand up against the fast-lane, homogenised world so often seen in other cities throughout the world. Slow cities have less traffic, less noise, fewer crowds.

Many cities expressed a desire to enter the Accosiation, but there are several rules that have to be fullfiled to achieve the honoured status of the slow city.

  • A city must agree to accept the guidelines of Slow Food and work to improve conviviality and conserve the local environment.
  • A city has to sign Manifesto which contains 55 pledges or criteria, grouped into six categories: environmental policy, infrastructure, quality of urban fabric, encouragement of local produce and products, hospitality and community and Citta Slow awareness.
  • A city also has to have population under 50 000 residents

Slow cities movement develops fast and gets new memebers on a regular basis. Great news for those, who like to travel slow – now all you need is to look from the List of CittaSlow cities and choose your next slowtrav destination.
